Sheepish Activities June 2020

We visit the office regularly to check post etc and quite often now, the guinea fowl are at the Lsd front door waiting.  There are only 6 in the picture, but we do have our full complement of 7 still.

Fly strike is becoming a problem as temperatures rise. We have had a couple of instances already on their feet. So today the sheep were sprayed which certainly helps.

The sheep were all gathered together in the pen. The farm children dished out Rich Tea biscuits at one side of the pen while I sprayed the sheep from behind. Social distancing observed, sheep distracted, it went perfectly.

Champion is still limping.  It is hard to see what is wrong with his foot.  He can be a bit of a drama queen but he’s had every treatment we’ve got. Today we resorted to a foot bath.  It’s a 2 minute affair, so 2 minutes of pellets were required to keep him distracted.

Champion ‘self shears’ to a certain extent each year. It tends to come off from the bottom upwards. We always shear the top ‘blanket’ off but at least he has some cool vents now.

We have opened the gate between the Orchard and field 11 to give them some extra grazing.  Two fields, such luxury! The ground is still very hard and very uneven – full of deep ruts from the mud earlier in the year. No good for delicate feet eh Champ.

The sheep are hot and spend a lot of time scratching.  Some of their wool comes off on its own.  Bramble has an interesting bare patch on her back.

We don’t have a date yet for the shearers but hopefully by next month they will have been!
