March/April news
April 8, 2026
We are back after a short break! It was a very wet winter but finally things are drying out now. We were alarmed to see all this blood today on Kangaroo. But on closer inspection we think she had just nicked her ear – perhaps pushing her head through the hole in the metal fence to get at some tasty grass and then had to force her head and ears back the other way.

Unlike Kangaroo, Pecky is particularly good at getting his head through the fence – only having one ear does have its advantage. He looks pretty smug about it with a toothy grin!

Bramble is doing well. Regular readers of our newsletter will know that last year she spent quite a long time isolated in her own pen and she lay down for a lot of the time. We thought her arthritis was getting the better of her but since we brought her back to the orchard, she has definitely perked up and is looking much more mobile. She does occasionally get bullied by Twiglet, but she does a good job of keeping out of his way.

The Guinea fowl are all still with us – it must be a record for us to have kept the flock for so long … usually the foxes pick them off. We have found a few eggs but whoever the mum is, she is not interested in sitting on them, which is good. Sitting on eggs is often when we lose them. We have noticed that when it rains, they have started to take shelter under the pig arcs with the sheep which is quite sweet.

Recently we had the Shetlands as neighbours. A couple of them were very friendly and came over to say hello to Chubby.
